Tuesday I had the opportunity to hang out in the Delisch studio for a few hours. If you are not familiar with Delisch, you should be. Delisch is a jewelry line designed by Denise Peacock, and she hand makes each piece right here in Santa Cruz. Denise is about to launch a new look for her website. She wanted to show a few pieces on a person. So, she asked me to model a few pieces for her. Well, actually my wrist and ears to be exact. I had to hold very still as to not make the earrings move; I almost tried not to breathe. For anyone who knows me well  may know that I hate to have my picture taken (hence no picture on my website). But somehow because these pictures were not going to include my face, it wasn’t as uncomfortable. Or maybe I am making progress……Is it time to face up and get a new picture for my website?

Big thanks to Denise for boosting my ego and telling me I had lovely wrists. Hey, they may be small but it is always nice when you get a compliment. I will keep you posted on her website’s new look and if my wrists make the cut.  In the mean time you can shop her gorgeous jewels here www.delisch.com

Friday night I went to the CCA’s graduating fashion designers’ runway show with some of my friends from fashionArt Santa Cruz. I was impressed with the fashion design department’s focus on sustainable fashion. Plus, it was so nice to go to a fashion show that I was not organizing!

The death toll is now over 1000 people. Some large retailers of “fast fashion” have gotten together to discuss the situation. As of now several European companies, including H & M, Primarck and Zara, have said they would sign an agreement to fund upgrades in Bangladesh factories. No US companies have agreed to sign the agreement yet. According to NPR the company PVH, who makes clothes for Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, had stated last year that they would sign a similar agreement but have not yet come forward. So where are Walmart, Gap, JC Penney and Disney?

Now all us women know how horrible it is to go swimsuit shopping. The badly lit dressing rooms and three way mirrors don’t help. Well, I have just the  solution for you. Last month I met Brooke from Brooke’s Beach. She makes custom swimwear, and can copy your favorite suit for you! She makes your first suit out of black and then checks the fit. Next you choose your fabric, it must be a 4 way stretch, and makes your suit. You actually end up with two suits for the price of one. Her prices ranges from $150 – $100, which is pretty reasonable for 2 custom suits. Brooke also does custom rash guards.

Brooke was a surfer who couldn’t find what she wanted in swimwear so she started making her own. She has now been designing and sewing locally for over 25 years. Call her for an appointment at 831-609-6027.

I am referring to the factory collapse in Bangladesh last week. This is following a factory fire last November that killed around 100 people. Yes, there are not enough fire or safety inspectors in Bangladesh but it is the consumers need for cheap clothing that is fueling these disasters.

We, the consumers, need to think before we buy; only our buying power will make a difference between someone’s life and a t-shirt for $5. Is it worth it?

A couple of weeks back I was checking out the local designer section at Wallfower Boutique downtown. I found a fantastic a-line skirt, unfortunately not by a local designer. Wow, I forgot how flattering this style can be; it is fitted through the waist and then gently skimming the hips into a slight flare. Anyone can wear this shape, it adds curves for those who are straight up & down, hides hips for the pear shaped and is perfect for petites because the slight flare won’t overwhelm their frame. I think While I have focused on the pencil skirt, which has that hint of sexiness, I am now rethinking my whole spring look. I am going to build it around the a-line skirt, which has a slightly less restrictive feel and a little more nonchalance than a pencil skirt look; perfect for spring and summer. They also look great with low heels like kitten heels or wedges, which are my preferred heel. Now, if I can just find some………
